Blurb (from Goodreads):

Two destinies. One death.

“Her kiss could kill us, and my consent signed our death certificates.”

Eric Welborn isn’t completely human, but he isn’t the only shade in the small Midwest town of Hayworth. With one year left before his eighteenth birthday, Eric is destined to win a long-raging war for his kind. But then she happens. In the middle of the night, Eric meets a nameless shade, and she’s powerful—too powerful—and his beliefs are altered. The Dark has lied to him, and he’s determined to figure out exactly what lies were told, even if the secrets protect his survival.

Jessica Taylor moves to Hayworth, and her only goal is to find more information on her deceased biological family. Her adoptive parents agree to help on one condition: perfect grades. And Jessica is distraught when she’s assigned as Eric’s class partner. He won’t help, let alone talk to her, but she’s determined to change him—even if it means revealing everything he’s strived to hide.

This book was fairly a surprise. I definitely enjoyed the ride. And the loved the twist about the Light and the Dark. It’s fair to say that it turned out to be a pretty interesting read.

Jessica or Jess knows she is different but she’s more keen on finding about the mysterious accident that led to her biological parents’ death. Meanwhile, Eric knows his time is limited because he’s a shade and the first descendant of the Dark and he has to fight the Light in order to restore the balance, at least that’s what the prophecy says. But when he meets another mysterious shade who’s totally oblivious about her origin, Eric understand there’s something more going on but they both can’t stay away from each other. Will he be able to find out about her original identity or is their love story doomed from the start?

The plot was really enjoyable and unpredictable! I loved the way the story started and how it flowed smoothly throughout the book. I was engaged from the start and the author kept me curious enough to see where the story was headed. Jessica is quite a loner until she meets Crystal and Robb. But it’s Eric Welborn that she can’t get out of her mind. I enjoyed the mysterious aspect of the story, although I did figure out who was who, but it was still pretty interesting to read about. I am definitely intrigued to know more about Jess’s past and about her parents.

I liked Jess, she was a pretty great character but Eric stole the show. I loved his character, although he was brooding mysterious type at first, he did reveal his real self to Jessica. I did like the romance although it was not a major influence.

But I would have liked to know about the state where Eric morphs into his real self when he turns into a shade, his real self- Shoman. I was thinking it was something avatar-ish though we get a good glimpse about that in book two which was a relief. I didn’t quite like the decision that Jess took at the end, I know she wanted what was good for everyone but it kind of seemed a little bit silly, I mean it was a bit of a risky decision. Nonetheless, I am interested to see how this trilogy proceeds.

Overall, Minutes Before Sunset was a great read! I loved the plot and the characters kept me interested. The writing was smooth and easy to read and the pace was fast throughout the book which made it an easy read. I can’t wait to finish this trilogy!
