Blurb (from Goodreads):
Ava has spent her life running from the monsters that lurk in the shadows, always the prey. She finally thinks she can settle down, have a normal life, and work on not being so scared of the world around her. That is until she runs into her worst fear.
He has finally found the potential family he has always wanted. All he has to do is make his little bird sing. Will Ava escape with her humanity intact?
Animal was an interesting and haunting read. I haven’t read anything like this before. This was something definitely new for me, the plot, the characters were greatly executed. This book is not about a happy tale about two people, it’s dark and heavy and it’ll consume you. I think this book will haunt me forever.
The story is about a girl named Ava. She along with her cousin Toni has been on the run ever since they were children. She was running from a particular vampire named Michael but one day her nightmare comes true and she is kidnapped by him. Michael is obsessed with Ava and he plans to make her his in his own way. Ava feels like a bird trapped in a cage as she begins to understand she can never escape his place, no matter how hard she tries.
The plot was indeed new and unique. Animal is actually a spin-off of “The Sunshine series” by the author but can be read as a standalone. Kudos to the author who for being able to write a spin-off that is able to stand entirely by itself! As I said earlier, the plot was greatly executed. The author added a twist to the traditional tale of the vampires. I have read vampire novels before but this was a great variation in comparison with those books. The setting was gothic and the plot was dark and intriguing. I even had goosebumps during a few scenes.
The characters were very intriguing. Ava wanted and dreamed of living a normal life but that was impossible for her. I liked her, she tried to be strong and brave but she was a vulnerable person and scared inside. I specially liked the decesion she took in the end regarding Toni, that must have been very, very difficult for her but nonetheless she put her cousin before herself. That made me respect her very much. The most intriguing character of this novel is definitely the antagonist of this story, Michael. I hoped that somewhere along the story I will be able to love him but the more I read, the more I hated him. He had his own set of rules and although he wanted to make Ava his own he didn’t hesitate to torture her brutally whenever she broke one of them. He was so difficult and complex and to understand. Later we are given the reason why he turned this way for which I really felt sad for him and I sympathized but the next moment he was back to being the evil person he is. Though he was not a human he was not completely devoid of feelings, he wanted Ava to love him, he felt sad and angry. The author beautifully portrayed his vulnerability. She made this character so haunting deep and dark that you’ll feel bad for him but also would not be able to stop yourself from hating him.
Toni, Ava’s cousin is a character worth mentioning. Not for once did she give up looking for Ava after she went missing. She frantically searched for her and even took the help of another vampire in order to do so. Evan was another great character. He was a vampire but he was also trapped in the house like Ava. He did his best to protect her but in the end he was simply helpless.
The writing was refreshing and pleasant to read. There were continuously overlapping chapters from Ava’s past which was very intersting to read. It added more about her background. I really loved how the author connected everything and portrayed the events. Their was actually multiple POVs which made it easier to understand what was going on in everyone else’s mind. The pace was neither too slow nor too fast. The tension kept me glued to my seat, for me it wasvmy bed and I couldn’t wait to know what happened next. This book was incredibly unpredictable.
Overall, the plot was unique, dark and haunting. The characters were intriguing and unforgettable, specially the antagonist. And the writing style was refreshingly great. Though it is a New-Adult book, there is less focus on the steamy aspect which is actually good because of the senario here is totally different. This book kept me on the edge from the very first page and the mysterious aspect of the book is indeed greatly exploited which made the book more haunting.
Definitely yes if you up for something heavy and dark and for those who love vampires with a twist.
