Blurb (from Goodreads):
Stabbed. Burned by a dragon. Abandoned for the windrocs to pick over. The traitor Ra’aba tried to silence Hualiama forever. But he reckoned without the strength of a dragonet’s paw, and the courage of a girl who refused to die.
Only an extraordinary friendship will save Hualiama’s beloved kingdom of Fra’anior and restore the King to the Onyx Throne. Flicker, the valiant dragonet. Hualiama, a foundling, adopted into the royal family. The power of a friendship which paid the ultimate price.
This is the tale of Hualiama Dragonfriend, and a love which became legend.
One word to describe this book. Wow. This book was simply superb, it completely blew my mind, it was full of action from the very first page and it managed to capture my attention throughout the book. I was in a dilemma whether to sign up for this book tour or not, I’m so glad I did, otherwise I wouldn’t have found out this jewel.
This is the story of straw head, well I mean Hualiama, a dragonet named Flicker and a dragon named Grandion and the amazing bond between them. Hualiama is a royal ward, she was adopted by the queen. But their kingdom is attacked by the traitor Ra’aba and the royal family is imprisoned and she is thrown down from a Dragonship. But Flicker, the dragonet (means he is not a fully grown dragon yet) saves her from the mighty fall and nurtures her back to health. And they develop an amazing friendship between them, he names Hualiama straw head. After seeing a mighty battle between two dragons, one becomes seriously wounded and she gives all her might to save that dragon and finally she is able to, this dragon is known as Grandion and Hualiama becomes her Rider. With the help of these two mighty dragons and a group of monks they plan to overthrow the traitor and restore the real king back to his throne.
The plot was great and very unique. I don’t think I ever read anything like this. It was simply refreshing. It was filled with action from the very first. The friendship between Hualiama or in short Lia and Flicker formed slowly, they taught each other their language and it was actually a great feeling to read about it, their bond was so great. She always wanted to fly, fly with the dragons and she got to fulfill this with Grandion as she became the Dragon Rider. She had to gather allies, train herself and become fully prepared before attacking the palace.
Lia was an astonishing character, she was fiercely brave, loyal and protective. Like everybody she was not deprived of fear. She wanted to save her family at all cost. So as per instructed by an ancient dragon she visits a monastery and becomes an apprentice and learns how to fight. She knows she has to work very hard because nobody has ever been able to touch Ra’aba. Flicker was indeed an adorable character. He stood out for me throughout the entire novel. He was protective and loyal towards Lia. And he loved when he was flattered and showered with attention. Grandion was another mighty character, he was a big dragon after all. His bond with Lia waa something different, something more than simple friendship yet it was so pure. I just loved their bond, it was so amazing.
The plot twist, OH MY GOD, never in a thousand year did I imagine that could happen. I definitely didn’t see that coming, I was completely in denial that it could happen and my mouth was literally hanging open, it took a more than a couple of minutes to proceed what just happened and finally move on to the next part. And the last part, omg, I cried so hard, I didn’t imagine that was going to happen either, I was completely devastated.
The writing was gorgeous. Man, this guy can write. Everything was so vividly described, every single detail was perfectly planned out. One thing I have to say about this book though, is, it can be confusing sometimes. With all the old English language and new made-up words it was a challenging read. I had to re-read a few lines or paragraphs sometimes because of that, it took a some time to get into the flow but once I got in, there was no stopping. This would definitely be epic film. Dragons fighting, swords clashing, yup it would definitely be a mind blowing film.
Overall, this was an awsome book, full of action, adventure, vividly graphic details and great characters. It kept me at the edge and I couldn’t wait to know what happened next. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.
I highly recommend this book, it definitely deserves more exposure. All fantasy lovers out there, you can’t miss this book at any cost, grab this one as soon as possible.
Marc is the bestselling author of 12 fantasy novels. Aranya and The Pygmy Dragon are full of dragons, battles and romance, and are set in a unique island-world above the toxic cloudlands. He’s also the author of a bestselling African historical fantasy series set in ancient Ethiopia.
Current projects: Dragonlove, the sequel to Dragonfriend, and the sequel to The Pygmy Dragon are being drafted.
Marc was born Cape Town but now lives and works in Ethiopia with his wife and 4 children, 2 dogs, and a variable number of marabou storks that roost on the acacia trees out back. On a good night there are also hyenas prowling along the back fence.
When he’s not writing about Africa or dreaming about dragons flying across the moon, Marc can be found travelling to remote locations. He thinks there’s nothing better than standing on a mountaintop wondering what lies over the next horizon.
